Focus group
meeting: Youths in ward 28 met to discuss avenues for youth participation
in governance. The thrust of the meeting was to discuss with young
people the ways in which they can participate in national processes
such as elections. One of the issues discussed at the meeting was
the need for young people to register as voters as well as to participate
in elections. The youths felt that there was need to change voting
days into public holidays so that people have the time to queue
and vote. Some of them highlighted that they were afraid to participate
in elections because of the history of violence associated with
elections in Zimbabwe. They however acknowledged that they can participate
in elections without causing chaos in their community.
Entrepreneurship workshop: 58 young people from Mzilikazi attended
an entrepreneurship workshop held at the Mzilikazi home craft centre
on Thursday September 8, 2011. The workshop was held under the theme:
Entrepreneurship: Avenues for youth participation, what can young
people do to get themselves a source of living. Local businessman,
Mr. Kunze who owns Zero Supplies facilitated the workshop. He told
the young people to desist from drug and alcohol abuse if they are
to realize their full potential. He highlighted that no one would
approach the young people to give them any capital hence there was
need for them to identify opportunities in their community then
find ways of fitting themselves into the economic chain. He challenged
the youths to first of all have the correct mindset, be determined
and patient before they can take up different business ideas. The
youths at the workshop appealed to NYDT to facilitate a skills workshop
that would give them knowledge on project proposal writing. They
indicated that a lot of them have business ideas that need capital
to implement but they had no idea how to source the capital. They
however, acknowledged the big role that entrepreneurship within
young people can play in creating employment and empowering the
youths. Zero supplies concluded the workshop by pledging to employ
two young people from Mzilikazi as well as to donate some computers
to the Mzilikazi youths.
