PYD
director further remanded out of custody Chipinge Court Magistrate Vusumuzo Gapara has postponed the trial of Claris Madhuku, Platform for Youth Development Trust (PYD) Director to the 8th of November 2011 after his lawyer requested for more time to look into the state arguments. The state prosecutor who presented his arguments before Magistrate Gapara brought a state witness leading to the lawyer requesting for more time as the state had never brought its witness since the inception of the case. Madhuku who was represented by Langton Mhungu of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights is being charged for contravening section IV of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA). The state alleges that the accused (Madhuku) addressed a gathering without notifying the regulating authority. In postponing the case, Magistrate Gapara said Madhuku should return to court on the 8th of November 2011 for trial. Madhuku is adamant that justice will see the day. He insists that the case will not deter him from his human rights work. PYD is involved in a fierce battle with Macdom Investments over an intended displacement of Chisumbanje villagers to pave way for sugar plantation. PYD was mandated by the community to represent and help them keep possession of their traditional land.
