NYDT
activity update
National Youth Development Trust
August 02, 2011
Bulawayo
A round table
discussion was held in Bulawayo to discuss the constitution making
process and identify opportunities that are still available for
the youth to make their input. The co-chairperson of COPAC, Hon.
Edward Mkhosi and BPRA
coordinator Rodrick Fayayo were the presenters. Youths were encouraged
to take full advantage of the second all stakeholders' conference
to make their input. They were also urged to read full the draft
constitution before deciding how to vote during the referendum.
The meeting was attended by 50 youths, civic leaders and media practitioners
from Bulawayo.
Lupane
Centre
A public speaking
contest was held at Lupane Centre on Friday with students deliberating
on the topic, "The role played by education in creating a
responsible youth". The contest was attended by at least 80
from 10 different schools from the Lupane district. Out of the 10
contestants, only 2 were male and all the three winners were female.
The pupils explored the positive impact that education can have
in societies. They highlighted that it empowered young people such
that they are not prone to manipulation by those in power. They
also acknowledged education as a way to avert crime as most young
uneducated people are bound to turn to criminal activities to earn
a living. The contest saw pupils presenting in both English and
isiNdebele.
Madojwa,
Lupane
The organisation
managed to host a meeting in Madojwa for the first time on Friday.
NYDT programmes Manager , Mmeli Dube addressed the youth on the
constitution making process and key among the issues that came out
is the fact that there is still little knowledge about the process
in the area despite the fact that outreach meetings have been done
by COPAC. Only a few of the youths indicated that they had heard
about COPAC outreach meetings but had not actually attended any
of them either because they did not know they were allowed to participate
or because they heard about the meetings after they had been done.
They said they look forward to more activities by NYDT as it is
the only way they can keep abreast with what is going on in the
country. The meeting was then followed by a soccer match that was
attended by more than 100 young people from the village.
Shabulanyana,
Lupane
NYDT held a
meeting in Lupane at Shabulanyana area to discuss the constitution
making process and strategic entry points for youth participation
in the remaining stages. The presentation was made by Mziwandile
Ndlovu from Bulawayo
Agenda. Young people present at this meeting highlighted the
fear of victimization by state security agents as one of the reasons
why they were not free to take part in crucial national processes
such as constitution making. The meeting saw a turnout of close
to a hundred young people who also converged for a soccer match.
