The Youth Agenda
Trust held a constitution discussion forum at Dombotombo Hall, Marondera
under part of it's our constitution, our future campaign.
The objectives of the discussion forum were to:
- Reflect on
the challenges and successes of the community outreach led by
COPAC.
- To map strategies
for increased youth participation in the second all stakeholder´s
conference, the referendum and the remaining aspects of the constitution
making process.
The meeting
was attended by 86 (46 male, 40 female) youths from Marondera and
surrounding farming communities. The following key issues emerged
from the discussion forum:
- Youth participation
was very low in the outreach process.
- The violence
that marred the 1st stakeholder's process and the outreach
phases compromised qualitative inputs from young people.
- The participants
unanimously resolved to fight against violence in the remaining
stages of the constitution making process.
Our Constitution,
Our future ball games tournament -17 July 2011
A netball and
soccer tournament was held on Sunday 17 July 2011 at St Dominic's
Nora Primary School, Rusike Growth Point in Goromonzi. Over 300
youths participated in the tournament with 6 soccer teams and two
netball teams taking part. The tournament was meant to conscentise
the Goromonzi community on the ongoing constitution making process
and to encourage non violent participation of youths in the remaining
parts of the constitution making process. The tournament was highly
successful as it drew local parliamentarians, councilors, traditional
leaders and participating teams from Marondera, Goromonzi, Ruwa
and surrounding communities. However two youth activists were arrested
for unclear reasons by police details who appeared to have been
following the proceedings at the tournament. The youths are still
in custody and the Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights is still battling for their release.
