Statement
on the World Environment Day 5 June 2011
Youth Agrarian Society
June 03, 2011
The Youth Agrarian
Society joins the rest of the world in commemorating this year's
World Environment Day under the theme: "Forests: nature at
your service". A reminder of the importance of forestry in
our lives as the majority of the people depends on forests for their
livelihoods. They also play a pivotal role in the global fight against
climate change by releasing oxygen to the atmosphere and absorbing
carbon dioxide. They create and maintain soil fertility and help
to regulate the often-devastating impacts of storms, floods and
fires.
In commemorating
this year's World Environment Day, the Youth Agrarian Society
is setting up forestry nurseries at community level in all its operational
rural districts across Zimbabwe. The nurseries will serve as a source
the diverse tree species that are adapted and those that can be
adopted in each locality. The young people will be leading the efforts
to curb deforestation through reforestation of degraded forests
in their communities.
The Youth Agrarian
Society continues to advocate for the formulation and effective
implementation of government policies and projects that are environmentally
friendly in each sector that has a direct bearing on the environment
i.e. Agriculture, mining and industry. There is also a need to integrate
environmental issues, food security and climate change in coming
up with lasting solutions to address deforestation and degradation
of the land's most biologically diverse ecosystems.
