No elections this year!
Youth Forum
May 19, 2011

The reckless and uninformed utterances by the President come as a shock to all sane Zimbabweans. The editor of the herald should also be charged for publishing such nonsense in a bid to tarnish the name of the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe.

For the President to claim that the GPA states the Government of Many Names was not supposed to last more than two years is absolute rubbish and lies. Nowhere in the document does it give the life expectancy of the unity government; the only thing that has got timelines is Article 6 which deals with the constitution making process. Leaders should not enjoy misleading the nation into believing wrong things, they should learn to nature love for the truth.

The President seems to be living in a vacuum or maybe his informants are at it again, for him to think that the constitution making process will start to move swiftly now simply because he now wants elections is rather misguided. The flawed process has been dogged by controversies and obstacles from the onset and there are no indications these will stop anytime soon. One thing his informants need to do is tell him the truth: the referendum can never be in July like he claims. The man is simply living in dreamland.

The people of Zimbabwe have their demands they want met before elections are held including systems that will ensure Zanu PF and its supporters will not unleash terror on the voting populace. Zanu PF should be reminded that the issue of elections is a national issue that cannot be decided upon by a few old men popularly known as the Politburo, party positions should never be translated into national positions as there are statutories that deal with such issues. They should know that Zimbabwe is not a one party state and the time when they used to make decisions for the masses has passed.

The Youth Forum would also like to take this opportunity to encourage all youths to register as voters as it is the elections that we can decide on who will govern us, not the Politburo. Youth Forum is running a Youth Go register to Vote' Campaign aimed at adding at least a million new young voters to the voters roll and has so far made significant strides. Many youths have so far registered and more are still taking action. Take the necessary documents and your friends and register to vote and don't forget to vote come elections.
