Police bar NYDT workshop
National Youth Development Trust
March 14, 2011

Police in Lupane have denied NYDT to hold a Youth Peace Building Workshop in Lupane after notifying the police of the activity for avoidance of a possible disruption by the police. The workshop was (still is) scheduled to be held on the 18th of March 2011.

Asked why the clearance has been denied, NYDT officers were only told that the ban on meetings imposed recently had not yet been lifted and until such a directive had been officially given no meetings would be cleared.

NYDT has scheduled youth peace building workshops in Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South as a precursor to the election period. The workshops are meant to encourage peaceful campaigns especially in rural areas where political violence is common. The ban of meetings/workshops is partly reflective of the hostile environment that normally prevails in Zimbabwe towards election time. NYDT is currently pursuing the legal route to be able to conduct its activities.
