State security agents and police disrupt a Community AIDS Forum in Mabvuku
African Regional Youth Initiative Zimbabwe (ARYIZim)
February 14, 2011

On Thursday 10 February state security agents and police disrupted a Community AIDS Forum in the high density area of Mabvuku in Harare. The meeting had been organised by the African Regional Youth Initiative Zimbabwe (ARYIZim), HIV/AIDS and Law Project of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe National Network of People Living with HIV (ZNNP+). A local organiser from ZNNP+, Tsuro Makona, was taken by the police and detained for most of the day. The reason given by the security agents for the disruption was that the meeting was being held without clearance.

The purpose of the Community AIDS Forums is to engage communities in dialogue on topical issues around HIV/AIDS with the purpose of obtaining solutions from within communities. Present at the Mabvuku forum were people living with HIV, community leaders, youths and adults and community health workers. The African Regional Youth Initiative Zimbabwe strongly condemns the actions of the security agents as it negatively affects work on HIV/AIDS in communities. We call upon the authorities to work with instead of against organisations in the fight against AIDS.
