How
do the boys end up at the Home?

Some of the children
come from the street, through Childline or the Department of Social
Welfare. Most of them come from children's homes especially
Emerald Hill, Harare Children's Home and Upenyu Hutsva Children's
Home. When they reach ten years of age, they come to us. Its specifically
boys who come here.
Where
do the boys go to school?

We try to find the boys
places at schools that are close to us. Most of the boys who come
from Emerald Hill will already have places at St John's. It
depends on how well the child does in school. Then there are a few
whose sponsors will find them a place at a private school. In all
of this we work with Christ Ministries, which is behind the Show
Grounds.

We are having trouble
with school fees. That is what I would say is our greatest challenge.
When the boys are ready to write exams we are unable to pay their
examination fees. Another challenge that we face is that of providing
school uniforms for the boys. The ones who come from Emerald Hill
usually have everything that they need. The Sisters there do a very
good job of taking care of them. But our boys who go to Allan Wilson
sometimes have to miss school because they don't have the
right uniform. Another challenge we face is that of money. We find
that our staff members have to go for several months without salaries.
Do you
give the boys support after they leave the home?

That is one
of our difficulties. Child Protection Services is running a programme
where they reunite children with their families. We try to find
the boys' families and encourage them to visit them, so that
when he leaves us he has somewhere to go. Some boys are helped by
Churches whose members take them in. Most boys, however, have nowhere
to go.
