Feedback
from Mashonaland East outreach on constitution making
Youth Agenda Trust
February 11, 2010
Marondera The
Youth Agenda Trust conducted a consultative meeting with school
children at Marondera High School on Friday 5 February 2010. The
meeting was attended by over 900 children from Marondera High School,
Waddilove High School, Nagle House Girls High School, Nyameni High
School and Bernard Mzeki Boys High School. Speakers were Mr Chimukuche,
Provincial Head, Ministry of Youth, Last Patsika, Child Mayor of
Marondera, Mr Dhliwayo, Education Officer, Assistant Inspector Madhoyo,
Victim Friendly Unit of the Zimbabwe Republic Police. The meeting
was chaired by Dalia Patsika the child governor of Mashonaland East.
The main aim of the meetings is to champion the rights of children
during the constitution making process which is currently underway.
The meeting was successful though it was almost derailed by a one
Mr Kunaka who is purported to be the national youth service focal
person in Mashonaland East. He was ignorantly arguing that the graduates
of the national youth training service and the Zanu PF youth league
should teach the school children the correct history of the country.
Wedza Youth
Agenda Trust held a Community Discussion Forum on constitution making
at Wedza inn in Wedza on Saturday 6 February 2010. The meeting was
attended by over 150 youth who had walked from Garabha village,
Makwarimba village, Matsine village, Zaire and other surrounding
villages in Wedza. The meeting was facilitated by the Youth Agenda
secretariat and representatives from the local council. Top amongst
the concerns of most youth from the community was the need for constitutional
provisions which guarantee civil liberties and political rights
as well as clear mechanisms for transitional justice.
The two meetings
are part of the outreach programme rolled out by the Youth Agenda
Trust as it seeks to empower youth and school children to participate
in the constitution making process. The outreach will be targeting
eight districts for the month of February and will be carried out
in four provinces i.e. Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West, Midlands
and Matebeleland North.
