Zimbabwe's democratization still unaddressed
Youth Alliance for Democracy
September 09, 2009

It is now over six months since the inception of the inclusive government and most of the issues towards the democratization of the nation are still unaddressed due to political fragility and lack of trust between three parties in government. Hence, due to this turmoil situation, the ensurity of the timely constitution is slugging down with this hopeless environment.

The select committee is reported to have downed tools in protest of paltry allowances whilst ZANU PF feels MDC should by now have facilitated the lifting of restrictions which it prefers to call sanctions. The Politburo ZANU PF'S highest decision making body is on record saying that the issue of the constitution is only meant to effect regime change diplomatically hence political will on the part of the former ruling party is lacking. The effects of such political pornography is either the constitution will be delayed or it will be fast tracked, both of which are unfortunate and evil to the democracy starving Zimbabweans.

Youth Alliance for Democracy (YAD) has taken an initiative against this background to embark on nationwide youth pressure campaign to pressurise the government to timely act over the building of the new constitution as this is the last hope that citizens start to feel now. We are also sending the daily count down message through emails to all of the members of the select committee co- chairpersons and rational citizens to build cohesion amongst all the citizens of Zimbabwe.

We also urge fellow pro-democratic organisations and movements to complement these efforts as a step towards our struggle in the opening of democratic space. We also feel that instead of just lamenting the denial democratic right of the people of Zimbabwe, this time should be utilized to conscientize, educate and mobilise all and sundry to take not only the constitutional making process seriously but even equally critical democratic issues such as national healing, transitional justice, economic recovery to mention a few.

This is the time to strategically position communities to take an active role in issues to do with the nation to squash once and for all the top to bottom approach which has been a norm in Zimbabwe.
