The Youth Agenda Trust joins the rest of the world in commemorating
International Woman's Day which is celebrated on the 8th of
March each year. The commemorations are being held under the theme
"Women and men united to end violence against women and children".
In this global age women play a key and pivotal role in community
development and its sustenance. Women have also played a central
role in building and defending durable local democracy. The commemorations
also come at a time when the country's political leadership
has recently finalised the formation of an all inclusive transitional
government. However women continue to be unlawfully arrested, detained
and tortured for political reasons. Of great concern to us also
is the marginalised representation of women in all arms of government.
In this regard
we challenge the new political administration of the country to
create more opportunities for both women and young people so that
they actively and freely contribute towards the stabilization and
democratisation of the country. We therefore urge all young men
and women to partner together in the fight against systems and structures
which discriminate against women and young people as the first step
towards sustainable community development and democracy building.
