Mbeki blasted for spreading falsehoods Youth Forum condemns in strongest terms Mbeki's malicious falsehoods that Levi Mwanawasa had passed on last week, the claims which he failed to substantiate. We take this as wishful thinking in the wake of President Levi Mwanawasa's stance on the Zimbabwean situation. President Mwanawasa came out clearly that SADC was supposed to take action in Zimbabwe since there is a crisis contrary to Mbeki who consistently says that everything is normal in the country despite state sponsored violence perpetrated by by the Mugabe regime which has claimed more than 100 lives, displaced more than 300 000 families and left 5 000 people missing. Mbeki is the most determined man to defend and legitimize Mugabe's one man "election" held on the 27th of June. He is so biased towards Mugabe as evidenced by his push for talks led by him despite losing the mandate of the people. It is from this perspective that the South African President had been jovial with the 'death' of a fellow African brother just because they differed on their positions concerning the crisis-ridden Zimbabwe. This really shows the type of a person Thabo Mbeki is. It is therefore difficult to expect such a hypocritical and unprincipled man to be given a mammoth task to bring normalcy to this nation. One wonders how a President expects to bring an end the problems in a country by inviting someone who has never won a popular election let alone stand as an opposition presidential candidate (Mutambara) for talks ignoring someone (Morgan Tsvangirai) who actually has the mandate of the people as reflected by the March 29 harmonised poll. Mbeki should be reminded that democracy and justice are the underlying principles, which should guide all the nations in their processes. There is no need for rigidity by sticking to what the people did in the past concerning liberation of the African people; it is not a license to abuse people whom one claims to have fought for. If Mbeki wants history not to judge him harshly he should stop worshipping the Zimbabwean self-styled dictator and be objective about the Zimbabwean situation or he should simply resign and give a chance to other progressive African people. Youth Forum hails the positions taken by Botswana and Zambia and urges other Zimbabwean neighbours to take the same stance before Zimbabwe is in the grave, we do not afford anymore the mess which we are currently in. The Zimbabwean situation is far much worse than what was prevailing in the colonial era. As Youth Forum we are not only looking at the people who have been victimized just after the harmonized election to date, we trace the atrocities from 1980 when ZANU PF assumed power and we maintain that talks led by ZANU PF are only meant to metamorphosise ZANU PF brutal rule like what happened in 1987 in the so called unity accord which saw the swallowing of PF ZAPU by ZANU PF.If ever they are going to be talks they must be inspired by the people's will as reflected by the March 29 harmonised election. We also support MDC position that talks should be held at a neutral venue other than the statehouse since it is tantamount to legitimizing Mugabe's illegitimate rule. The blunder to leave out other important stakeholders such as the civic society and churches like what happened when amendment number 18 was introduced should be done away with.
