Stars
Foundation awards three African organisations US$100,000 each for
work with children
Stars
Impact Awards
November 22, 2007
Three African organisations
have become the first ever recipients of the STARS Impact Awards.
Selected for making a demonstrable difference to the lives of disadvantaged
children, the organisations from South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe
each received a donation of unrestricted funds and consultancy support.
Patron of the STARS Impact
Awards, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan said: "I
am proud to be a patron of the STARS Foundation Impact Awards, and
to support the work of those who are building a better world for
children. STARS treats underprivileged children like the shining
treasures they are - giving them the protection, education,
and support to help create a brighter future for us all."
The Awards are made in
the categories of health, protection and education. This year's
recipients are:
- The Health Award
Recipient, Harare-based Island Hospice Zimbabwe, was selected
for its work with child carers who are increasingly being relied
upon to care for dying parents and who may themselves be infected
with HIV/Aids.
- The Protection Award
Recipient, CapeTown-based RAPCAN (Resources Aimed at the Prevention
of Child Abuse and Neglect) was selected for its provision of
support and care for children required to give evidence in court
of sexual abuse.
- The Education Award
Recipient, Iringa-based Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW) Tanzania,
was selected for its work with young people to provide peer to
peer sexual reproductive health education in remote rural communities.
Applications for the
2008 Awards are now open to organisation in Africa.
Chief Executive Muna
Wehbe said, "We hope the success of this year's recipients
will encourage many more organisations to apply in 2008. The recognition
and the unrestricted funding are vital boosts to those working so
hard to improve the lives of children."
