Tendayi meets a friend at the lake
Story written by Bernadine Laing, 11-year-old child at Chinyaradzo Children's Home
November 11, 2004

"Wake up! Wake up, Tendi or you will miss the trip to Lake Chivero!" Tendayi heard her mother shout.

Quickly, Tendayi aged 12 jumped out of bed. The trip to Lake Chivero! She did not want to be left behind.

Tendayi looked outside the window. Her heart beat with joy and fear at the same time when she saw the school bus.

"Tendayi, dress up! Your teachers are waiting for you."

"I am coming, please don’t leave me behind!"Tendayi shouted as she dressed.

When she got to the school bus, Tendayi saw her friends already sitting in the bus.

"Come in Tendayi. Get on the bus. We are going to Lake Chivero! they laughed at her.

Her teacher, Mrs Kambizi stood by the bus door.

"Good morning Tendayi. Please get on the bus. We are late already"

"Good morning Mrs Kambizi," Tendayi replied as she got on to the bus.

The bus began to move. Soon they left Highfield behind where Tendayi stayed. As the bus moved all the children laughed and sang and danced. They were all looking forward to going to Lake Chivero.

When they reached Lake Chivero, the children saw several animals. Tenday saw some rock rabbits and rhinos. Some of the children ran in fright when they saw some crocodiles. Mrs Kambizi asked each of the children to look for a friend among themselves. Tendayi was standing by herself when she saw a girl from Glen View Primary School and went to her.

"What is your name?" Tendayi asked her

"My name is Danayi."

The two girls started to talk about school.

" I like school," Danayi said.

"Me too" Tendayi replied.

Danayi took some biscuits from her small bag.

"Here, let us share these," she said to Tendayi

"Thank you," Tendayi said. Her mother had taught her that she must always thank someone when they do something nice to her. Danayi was a nice girl, thought Tendayi.

"I like going to Church. I like God," Tendayi told Danayi.

"I also like God and going to church" Danai smiled.

Tendayi and Danayi shared a packet of maputi and freezits as they watched the lake. Soon Mrs Kambizi was calling everyone.

"It is time to go now children. You will write what you have seen in your compositions"

"Goodbye Tendayi," Danayi said in excitement.

"Goodbye Danayi," Tendayi replied.

She was happy that she had met a good friend. When she got home, she will tell her mother about Danayi. She had met a good friend.
