Attack on ZINASU leader
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)
October 09, 2004

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) condemns the attack on the Zimbabwe National Students Union leader (ZINASU), Philani Zamchiya allegedly by the Zimbabwe Republic Police on Thursday 14 October 2004.

It is such barbaric acts that how an immature approach to duty by law enforcement agents that leaves a lot to be desired about their impartiality and professionalism.

It is the students' right to express their opinions about whatever is happening in the country whether be it political, social or economic. Attacking the student leader as a way to cow other students into fearfulness and cowardice only serves to manifest the despotic nature of the government and the ruthlessness of the police force.

The ZCTU therefore demands that there should be an investigation to bring these perpetrators of violence to book. It should be made clear to the law enforcement agents that this heinous way of maintaining peace and order can not be tolerated neither is it constitutionally acceptable.
