Mbuya Nebanda Children's Home
October 20, 2002

Greetings from Mbuya Nehanda Children's Home!

Mbuya Nehanda is a home for children formerly residing in the streets. We currently provide food, shelter, education, recreation and healthcare to approximately 70 children between the ages of nine and 18. As with most organizations serving children, we aim to provide the highest quality care and opportunities for those who reside here. However, due to a continuous lack of resources, and very little community involvement, we often fall short of our target objectives. Nevertheless, we persevere, and our presence at the Book Fair was not only a fund-raising venture, but a way for us to meet the community and share our needs and interests with people who might be able to contribute.

Due to our location, around 40 kilometres outside Harare, we are a bit isolated, and thus cut-off from other organizations serving children. We are seeking more community involvement at Mbuya Nehanda, not only through financial support, but social as well. We are always looking for community members to volunteer their time and energy to work with the kids at Mbuya Nehanda. You'll find they are eager learners, and appreciate it when adults take the time to plan enrichment activities and follow them through. Unfortunately, they rarely get the opportunity to participate consistently in activities like art, music and sports due to a lack of materials and equipment.

We are encouraging you to become an active member in your community through helping disadvantaged children. If you have a little bit of extra time to share with the children here, are willing to contribute something cash or in-kind, or know others willing to help, please contact us. If you are part of a church group or other organization, we would appreciate you sharing what you know about Mbuya Nehanda and encouraging people to become involved and contribute in whatever way they can. If you can help us raise awareness and remind people in the community that there are many children who need love, care and time you will have done a great service for the children at Mbuya Nehanda.

If you have any questions, or would like to become involved at Mbuya Nehanda, please contact Amai Kaseke at 073-25896.
