  • Bulawayo youth activists arrested

    April 08, 2013

Police in Bulawayo this morning rounded up and arrested members of youth pressure group for holding a demonstration against the continued neglect of locals in employment opportunities.

The members of the Mthwakazi Youth Leaders Joint Resolution were arrested along Belmont Road as they were demonstrating against a government parastatal that ‘bussed in and employed’ more than 20 youths from outside Bulawayo for a manual labour project happening in the City. The pressure group organized the demonstration to put pressure on the parastatal to prioritize local youths in projects happening in Bulawayo.

Youths from Bulawayo and Victoria Falls in particular and from Matabeleland in general have on previous occasions clashed with the police and some companies for what they call ‘the importation of labour and skill while it is locally available’.

It is the hope of many youths that the coming in of the Copac Draft Constitution as the Supreme law of Zimbabwe will address such concerns as Chapter Fourteen of the Draft Constitution creates a new system of government where decisions are done at provincial level.

Government Ministers have castigated the arrest of 21 Bulawayo youth activists who were protesting against ZESA’s decision of employing about 300 people from outside the Matabeleland Region for a project at Insukamini Sub Station in Bulawayo as reported in the Newsday of 09 April 2013.
