Zimbabwe scoops best voluntary services award

Zimbabwe (AAI Zimbabwe) scored a first to win the number one prize
under all voluntary service organisations which exhibited at the
Harare Agricultural Show held from 17-25 August 2012.
AAI Zimbabwe
received a Rothmans Floating Trophy for the Best Voluntary Services
Display during the official opening of the Harare Agricultural Show
on Friday 24 August 2012. AAI Zimbabwe Exhibited in the Rajiv Gandi
Hall, which saw over 40 voluntary service organisations participating
in the same hall. This year's 102nd Edition of the Harare Agricultural
Show ran under the theme "Innovative, Inspirational and Informative".
The Harare Agricultural Show is one of Zimbabwe's biggest showcases
which attracts local, regional and international exhibitors. Various
sectors including, the non-governmental, private, parastatals and
government players exhibit in the showcase.
In addition
to receiving a floating trophy, the First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe
among hundreds others visited the AAI show stand whose main attraction
was the presence of small scale women farmers who had come to showcase
their various farming products, which include maize grain, sugar
beans, soya beans, cowpeas, groundnuts, sorghum, cotton and eggs.
The participation of the women farmers in the exhibition was facilitated
by AAI Zimbabwe partner in the Food Rights and Trade Justice sector,
Lower Guruve Development Association (LGDA) which also participated
in showcasing its activities. LGDA supports over 6000 women farmers
in Guruve and Mbire districts in Mashonaland Central Province in
form of input provision and training on production and marketing
of the produce. It also offers training on project management, advocacy
and lobby, governance and economic literacy.
Commenting on
the award, AAI Zimbabwe Country Director, Ronnie Murungu said: "AAI
Zimbabwe works with various women groups and small-scale women farmers
in its poverty reduction and empowerment programmes. Winning the
show award is an indication of the impact of the AAI Zimbabwe work
with these groups."
AAI Zimbabwe,
whose vision is "A Zimbabwe without poverty and injustice in
which every person enjoys their right to a life of dignity,"
works with about 22 community-based organisations which reach out
to poor and excluded communities in Zimbabwe, especially women,
children and youth.
