Lucy Mazingi, the director of Youth Empowerment Trust (YET),
scooped the 2009 Director of the year award at a glittering ceremony
organised by the National Association of Non-Governmental Organisations
(NANGO) in Victoria Falls recently during the Directors' Summer
School.
The youthful looking Mazingi shed tears of joy as
she went to receive the prestigious and glittering trophy from the
guest of honour, Honourable Paurina Mpariwa, Minister of Labour
and Social Welfare.
"This is a big surprise," she said in
an emotionally charged voice, "Thank you for recognising the
work that we do with the youth. The youth sector is marginalised
by many people who do not understand young people and only associate
them with bad things such as violence and drug abuse," said
Mazingi.
She added that she had worked with the youth for
a very long time and she finds her work with them revitalising:
"I have helped lots of youths whom you see
in many spheres of life. Sometimes we help these youths behind the
scenes. Working with the youths makes me feel younger everyday and
you would never guess my correct age by merely looking at me,"
quipped Mazingi.
To land the Director of the Year accolade, Mazingi
shrugged off stiff competition from NGO directors under the umbrella
body who number more than a thousand.
Meanwhile ECONET scooped the NANGO Chairperson's
Award for Philanthropy in recognition of the giant corporate's
social responsibility. The mobile service provider was honoured
for its consistency in providing social services to the communities
that it serves.
120 NGO directors witnessed the awarding ceremony
sponsored by Barclays Bank.
