Stakeholder
Meeting on Rule of Law - Letter to Minster of Justice
National
Association of Non-Governmental Organisations in Zimbabwe (NANGO)
October 27, 2009
To: Hon. P. Chinamasa
Minister of Justice
Re: Stakeholder
Meeting on Rule of Law
As you may
recall, your ministry invited NANGO, amongst other civil society
organisations to participate in Access to Justice Stakeholder Conference
from 29 - 30 October 2009.
However the
recent development involving the harassment
and arrest of civil society leaders, including NANGO Board Chairperson
and Chief Executive Officer, has left NANGO without much choice
but to withdraw from the meeting pending resolution of this matter.
It is our considered view and also held by the majority of civil
society that the government has to act in good faith in its engagement
with stakeholders. In this case we are of the opinion that going
to Victoria Falls will be tantamount to endorsing a seriously defective
process.
To this end, please note
that while we are open to dialogue with the Ministry, we seriously
object to the manner in which the law is being arbitrary applied
to our members and leaders.
On behalf of
the NANGO Board and Management,
G Phiri
NANGO Board Secretary
cc: UNDP, Mr.
S. Chimhini, Civil Society Organisations invited to the Access to
Justice Conference
