  • BOCISCOZ calls for reflection and action on Zimbabwe agreement
Botswana Civil Society Solidarity Coalition for Zimbabwe (BOCISCOZ)
    October 06, 2008

We, The Botswana Civil Society Solidarity Coalition for Zimbabwe (BOCISCOZ) are concerned that following the signing of the Agreement between ZANU-PF and the two MDC Formations on 15 September 2008, there appears to be a political impasse in terms of the implementation of the agreement.

BOCISCOZ has always taken its mandate to conduct its activities from Zimbabwean civil society. This is because they are best able to provide valuable insights into the situation as experienced by ordinary Zimbabweans. They also provide guidance concerning appropriate support which groupings, such as BOCISCOZ, may provide to improve the situation in Zimbabwe. An example of this was the recent 'Let's Go Home and Vote Campaign' held before the run-off presidential elections. This activity was a result of direct requests from Zimbabwean civil society actors, who believed that it was important for Zimbabweans to exercise their right to vote. However, the exercise was called off following the decision by civil society organisations not to participate in the run-off elections due to the widespread violation of human rights. BOCISCOZ issued a statement supporting this decision.

The SADC region has been negatively affected by the crisis in Zimbabwe. This has been indicated by the numbers of migrants, both documented and undocumented, from Zimbabwe into the region. Reasons for the migration have been the economic and political instability as well as the widespread violation of human rights. It is not clear whether in reality, the agreement holds the answer to the current political and economic situation.

In order to better understand what the agreement provides for the finding of a sustainable solution to the crisis in Zimbabwe, BOCISCOZ will be holding a series of meetings on 9 and 10 October 2008. The aim of these meetings is to explain to the public, including Zimbabweans, the contents of the agreement. In addition to that, analyses will be made of its constitutional implications; how it deals with human rights violations and humanitarian challenges; the effect of the economic meltdown; the role of youth in the crisis, as well as the gender perspectives of these various themes.

BOCISCOZ believes that it is important that regional civil society solidarity with the peoples of Zimbabwe should continue to develop. To this end, we have invited representatives from Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia to share their experiences of working in solidarity with the peoples of Zimbabwe.
