  • NANGO acknowledges announcement of the political settlement
National Association of Non-Governmental Organisations in Zimbabwe (NANGO)
    September 12, 2008

The National Association of Non Governmental Organisations - representing Non Governmental Organisations operating in Zimbabwe - acknowledges the announcement of the much awaited agreement between Zimbabwean political parties as will facilitate the possible formation of a unity government. NANGO expresses its hope that the political agreement will usher in a new era which will encompass the demands of Civil Society as enunciated in the Zimbabwean People's Charter e.g. calling for a new Constitution produced by a people-driven participatory process.

NANGO awaits fuller details of the nature and scope of the agreement. NANGO herein promises to remain objective and unwavering on the demands enshrined in the People's Charter and in declarations made by Civil Society on Transitional Justice and will not hesitate to continue to engage and confront the new dispensation to deliver as per the requirements of Zimbabwean society.

It is NANGO's considered view that a Government of National Unity founded upon an elitist power sharing agreement is no guarantee that the humanitarian and other needs of the people of Zimbabwe will be addressed and healed. In light of this NANGO will continue to rally its membership and broader Civil Society to press for structural reforms in pursuit of constitutionalism, improved social service delivery, transitional justice and adherence to international standards and norms of rule of law, respect for human rights and good governance.

In spite of the stated discomforts with the yet to be announced outcomes of the flawed SADC mediation process; it is NANGO's hope that the agreement will comprise enforceable interim or transitional rules to guarantee the rule of law and upholding of all fundamental freedoms [assembly, speech, association] and in particular a conducive environment for unrestrained Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) operations to dispense all of their humanitarian, civic education and developmental objectives.
