  • Solidarity with Zimbabwe!
    Austria Zimbabwe Friendship Association
    April 25, 2008

Zimbabwe is slipping deeper and deeper into existential crisis - not only in social and economic, but also in political and constitutional terms.

More than three weeks after the combined elections, there is still no officially confirmed final result, even though the SADC, the AU and the UN have vehemently called for it. In a climate of growing nervousness and tension, following a largely peaceful election campaign, assaults by members of the security forces and self-styled militias are now on the increase. There is growing polarization among segments of the population, leading to fears of a dramatic increase in violent clashes.

The undersigned - many of them friends of Zimbabwe, who have been following the development of the country since the days of its struggle for independence and liberation with sympathy, with cooperation efforts in various areas, and with solidarity, but also with growing concern and criticism - call for increased attention, support and solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe:

    • Immediate publication of the election results to finally do justice to the vote of the people and make it known
    • Deployment in good time of a strong contingent of election monitors under AU / UN mandate should there be a run-off or partial rerun of the election! The election monitors should remain in the country until the announcement of the final results in order to supervise the vote counting process.
    • Immediate restoration of order and security for the people: an end to reprisals, an end to partisan actions by the security forces in support of the ruling government party, and an end to the intimidation of the population!
    • An urgent increase of humanitarian aid by the UN World Food Program in order to cope with the exacerbated supply and food crisis, and an end to all interference with and instrumentalization of aid!
    • Support for a renewed endeavor on the part of the SADC and AU to mediate between political key players with a strong involvement of civil society. Such mediation must put an end to the crisis and pave the way for a peaceful and democratic transition to a legitimate political order that can cope with the social and economic reconstruction of the country!
