  • MDC president arrested
    Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition

    Today, 23 January 2008, at 0400 hours, plain clothed police officers from Harare Central police station, Law and Order section raided the home of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) president Morgan Tsvangirai and arrested him.

    He was interrogated for more than four hours before being released at around 0800 hours. According to their lawyers, the police wanted assurance from the MDC president that there will be no disturbances in Harare in light of the party's proposed Freedom March, which is scheduled to take place today.

    At the time of his arrest, the Israeli imported water cannons were spotted being deployed in town and police trucks heading towards the high density suburb of Highfields, where the MDC is supposed to address its supporters.

    At 0915 hours, the Catalyst team spotted standby armed riot police officers at the following locations: Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) building; at the corner of First Street/ Nelson Mandela Avenue; the Construction House and at the corner Speke Avenue/ Park Lane.
