Chivasa's
trial postponed to 3 March
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
January
18, 2008
The Zimbabwe government
through its notorious state policing department, Zimbabwe Republic
Police is fighting hard to frustrate efforts by the National Constitutional
Assembly (NCA) to bring about a new constitution in the country.
Yesterday, Thursday 17 January 2008, NCA's National Spokesperson
Madock Chivasa appeared before Masvingo magistrate courts on charges
of insulting the police. The charges being leveled against Chivasa
have been described as manifestly unfounded by the organisation.
Chivasa is being charged under the notorious Public
Order and Security Act (POSA) a draconian law passed by the
Mugabe regime so as to easily clamp down on democratic forces and
to suppress freedom of expression.
NCA Chairman Dr Lovemore Madhuku said the work being done by the
organisation had landed Chivasa in trumped up charges of calling
the police 'Mugabe's dogs'.
"The Charges against Chivasa resemble desperate efforts by
the regime in trying to silence voices of those calling for a new
people driven democratic constitution which all citizens will participate
in," said Madhuku.
Chivasa appeared before Magistrate Patrick Mapiye and the state
could not continue with the case as there was no electricity so
the hearing was postponed to 3 March.
Chivasa was being represented by Philip Shumba of Mwonzora and Associates.
