UZ students arrested
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
May 11, 2007
Two students from the
University of Zimbabwe (UZ), Prosper Munatse and Munyaradzi Chikorohondo
were arrested and heavily assaulted yesterday, 10 May 2007 at 2030
hours while addressing a students gathering at the university campus.
Munatse, the
Secretary General of the Students
Christian Movement in Zimbabwe (SCMZ) and Chikorohondo conducted
a peaceful gathering of students at 2000 hours. They wanted to address
students on the lecturers strike. The lecturers have been on a strike
since the beginning of the semester in February demanding higher
remuneration. This resulted in only 5 of the 10 faculties writing
end of semester examinations.
According to a source,
the two students were apprehended while addressing the students
and held at the campus control room by the UZ security in particular
Munyaradzi Seredzayi. It is alleged that while in the custody of
the security, they were heavily assaulted. The two were taken to
Avondale Police Station and are currently being held at Harare Central
Police Law and Order Section.
Students who
visited them in the morning say that the two were mercilessly assaulted
and are being denied access to medical attention by the police.
Munatse sustained an injured right arm, a head injury and bruises
on his back while Chikohorondo sustained minor injuries.
