MORGAN Tsvangirai, the President of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has been assaulted in police custody at Machipisa Police Station where he is currently being detained.

Lawyers representing the detainees also said that Harrison Nkomo a lawyer with the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights was also assaulted after he visited the police station to enquire about the torture against the opposition leader.

The police are also refusing legal representation to more than 100 opposition and civil society activists who have been arrested by the police.

It is also reported that the police are firing water and teargas canisters against Highfields suburb in Harare.

Meanwhile, information reaching our information desk is that, an MDC activist Gift Tandire was shot dead at Mhizha Primary School in Highfields.

The clampdown against the pro-democracy activists follows a police ban against demonstration and political gatherings in Zimbabwe
