Resolutions from civil society meeting in Rusape
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
February 21, 2007

On Tuesday 20 February 2007, civil society convened  in Rusape at a meeting organized by Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition. The meeting discussed the state of the nation and the possible strategies to end the current crisis in Zimbabwe. Organizations represented were National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), Media Monitoring Project of Zimbabwe (MMPZ), Public Information Rights Forum (PIRF), Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) and Community Working Group on Health (CWGH) among others.

The following resolutions were made:

  1. That a new people driven, democratic constitution be put in place to resolve the crisis of legitimacy and governance in Zimbabwe
  2. That the social contract proposed by Reserve Bank Governor, Gideon Gono should be rejected unless government shows total commitment to include all stakeholders such as civil society, the church, labour, students and business in the resolution of the national crisis.
  3. That all citizens should rise against the postponement of the 2008 presidential elections
  4. That the administration of the Global fund and Aids levy be made transparent and also enhance people’s access to Anti retrovirals
  5. That there should be continued solidarity with teachers who have vowed to continue with the strikes for  a salary increment and better working conditions
  6. There should be unity of purpose among civil society organizations
