Strikes and Protests 2007/8 - Teachers and Lecturers
PTUZ leaders arrested
Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition
February 14,
2007
At around 1220hrs
today, the 14th of February 2007, Zimbabwean Police arrested Progressive
Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) President and Secretary General
Takavafira Zhou and Raymond Majongwe respectively for spearheading
the national strikes for teachers demanding salaries which are in
tandem with the PDL. The arrests come barely an hour after members
of the Central Intelligence Office (CIO) stormed Seke 4 High School
in Chitungwiza and quizzed Harare Chairperson, Jacob Rukweza, about
the state of the nationwide teachers strike.
Majongwe was arrested
in Malbereign at Haig Park Primary School together with McDonald
Mangauzana whilst Zhou was arrested in Masvingo at Rukato Primary
School with someone only referred to as Gideon. The four were on
a monitoring and evaluation escapade of the strike which has grounded
the education sector which started last three weeks ago.
Majongwe and Mangauzana
were dragged into a Mazda pickup truck plate number ZRP 3336 M and
are being held at Harare Central Law and Order. Zhou and Gideon
are being held at Chikato Police Station.
The Coalition
deplores the unjustified detention of the teachers' leadership.
The state should rather concentrate on addressing the cause of the
industrial action which has. paralyzed the education sector.
