Christian Alliance raided
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
November 24, 2006

In yet another indication of increased suppression of democratic space, the members of the state security agencies raided the offices of the Christian Alliance in relation to the protests which took place in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, Masvingo and Gweru on the 22nd of November 2006.

Four unidentified members of the state forced their way into the organization’s offices without a warrant of search. They were inquiring on the whereabouts of the organizers of the five minutes protests of horning, whistling, blowing horns in defiance of the repressive laws and calling for the democratization of the socio-political and legal space.

Christian Alliance are the conveners of The Save Zimbabwe Convention which converged on the 29th of July 2006, bringing together political parties, civic organizations and the churches towards the resolution of the turmoil and tenacity bedeviling the nation. The five minutes of protest under Save Zimbabwe Campaign are therefore a product of an amalgamation of various inputs and efforts of an impetus movement with a conviction and hope that a democratic Zimbabwe will one day emerge.

Since the campaign started on the 22nd of November 2006, four people have been arrested in Bulawayo for taking part in the protests which will continue till the set goals are achieved. The dates and actual time for the protests will be disclosed in due course.

Crisis Coalition deplores the intimidatory actions by the state machinery of raiding the private offices of CA as unlawful and unconstitutional. CA has the right to privacy and freedom of assembly and association as guaranteed by both local and international instruments.

Verdict on Madhuku
In a court hearing held at the Rotten Row Magistrates Court today, National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) chairperson, Dr Lovemore Madhuku had remand lifted owing to lack of substantial evidence by the state. Magistrate, Chipo Matibiri noted that if the state found any other evidence, Mr. Madhuku would be served with summons.
