NCA
to stage demonstrations on September 20
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
September
19, 2006
The NCA will this week be staging peaceful
demonstrations in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare, Masvingo and
Kadoma. The demonstrations are intended to back the NCA’s persistent
push for a new and democratic constitution.
It is significant that these demonstrations
come exactly a week after the Zimbabwean government brutally crashed
peaceful protests organized by our colleagues at the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). ZCTU leaders were not only
arrested but were tortured by state security agents while in custody.
The state had no shame in keeping in custody bleeding citizens.
There can only be one explanation to this: The state seeks to silence
all pro-democracy forces by naked brutality.
The NCA believes that the way forward
under such circumstances is to show the regime that no amount of
state sponsored terror will intimidated Zimbabweans. The NCA is
committed to continue the crusade of showing the majority of Zimbabweans
that the way to go is to confront this regime peacefully but with
unflinching determination. It remains the duty of all Zimbabweans
to tell the regime of President Robert Mugabe that we can
not be intimidated. We will continue to exert pressure on your government
until you give in to the demands of the people to have an open democracy
as the basis for progress and prosperity in Zimbabwe.
