statement on ZCTU protests
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
September
12, 2006
The National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA) is fully behind national protests
Operation
Tatambura/Sesihluphekile which is being organised by our members
the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). We believe the ZCTU has genuine
FOUR reasons to protest against the current harsh political-economic
conditions which have left the worker exposed.
- The issue of workers earning below
the poverty datum line (PDL) being taxed is one which confirms
that the regime is unfeeling and is not concerned by the worker’s
plight. In fact all workers must be earning above the PDL.
- With Zimbabwe having one of the
highest HIV rate of infection in the region, we support the ZCTU
in calling the government to make the anti-retrovirals (ARVs)
available to the affected for free.
- The civic society’s space has been
shrinking by the day through enactment colonial laws such as POSA,
AIPPA,
the Interception
of Communication Bill and the NGO
Bill. The government should devote its time to addressing
this sombre economic meltdown.
- The harassment of the informal traders
by the police is not only appalling; it is illegal as it deprives
the workers of their means to a livelihood. They cannot get employment
– thanks to regime’s skewed policies.
The NCA will be 100 percent behind
the ZCTU in all the places where demonstrations will take place.
Should the government not respond favourably – as it has already
indicated – the NCA will stage demonstrations very soon in solidarity
with the Zimbabwean worker who is a member of the NCA?
A new constitution now.
