Statement
on the dropping of charges against 128 NCA members
National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)
August
04, 2006
While the National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA) welcomes the decision by the State
to drop charges against its 128 members - who have been on remand
since last month – we call upon the government to stop the habit
of harassing its members using intimidatory tactics.
From the onset we were very much aware that there was no basis of
remanding these cadres let alone arrest them and detain them in
inhabitable cells at Harare Central Police Station.
The NCA wanted to challenge the illegal detention of the NCA members
and the draconian Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act which
the State was charging them. Given a chance we will challenge it.
These illegal
detentions are just vicious and dirty tactics by the regime meant
to instill some form of intimidation into our members. For the record,
the NCA membership is being made stronger each time there are these
unjust arrests.
We remain directed
and committed towards a democratic constitution.
