Artistes converge for Green Concert

Reigning City of Harare goodwill ambassador for the Water Conservation and Zero Litter Campaign, musician Derreck Mpofu, will on Friday evening host the first ever “Green Concert” at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale.

The concert will serve as an environmental awareness campaign through music, dance and song. Guests of honour at the event would be Minister of Environment, Water and Climate Saviour Kasukuwere and Minister of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Francis Nhema.

Mpofu said the event would be a night of song and dance with people celebrating the country’s environment and future. It would mainly address issues affecting the local environment and ways to preserve it. Some of the issues which will be discussed include litter, water conservation, poaching, planting of trees and pollution.

The dress code to the free green carpet event will be smart casual with a touch of green to promote green tourism.

The Chisikana Changu Zimbabwe hitmaker is expected to perform his hit track which celebrates the country’s beautiful natural resources and urges Zimbabweans to properly manage waste and conserve water.

Mpofu said one of the highlights of the night would be the unveiling of the colour-coded system of binning litter.

The concert would also feature musicians Albert Nyathi, Prudence Mabhena and Tererai Mugwadi.

A new group, Green Rainbow Choir, which is comprised of 50 children of different races and backgrounds, and the Zimbabwe Prison Service Band are also billed to perform at the event.

Their concert will be recorded for the production of a DVD which will be sent to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) studios and DStv’s National Geographic channel for airplay. The DVD will be released at least two weeks after the concert.

Mpofu condemned the recent killing of elephants through poisoning by poachers saying they would address these issues during the Green Concert. He said this week would be a Green Week where they would distribute green wristbands to members of the public to raise awareness towards a clean Zimbabwe by 2015. Clean-up campaigns will be held on the sidelines.

As goodwill ambassador, Mpofu has from last year been working hand in hand with the Environment Management Agency and the Environment ministry on clean-up campaigns in schools, cities and also facilitating tree-planting ceremonies.
