Bulawayo: 5-7 September
Welcome
Remarks
A big welcome to the
12th edition of the International Images Film Festival for Women
(IIFF). After the Chimanimani Arts Festival, the season of arts
festivals continues with IIFF and ends with the Zimbabwe Fashion
Week at a time when many people can attend. Prepare yourselves to
be challenged, excited and inspired by films depicting this year’s
festival theme WOMEN ALIVE: WOMEN OF PEACE!
The programme could not
have been created without particular support of all participating
embassies, organizations, festival organizers and film distributors
from lands far away. In addition, we are partnering for the first
time with the Images of Black Women (IBW) Film Festival in London
directed by Sylviane Rano, a festival that screens films on or by
women of colour. Also, for the fourth year running, IIFF partners
with Afrykamera in Poland directed by Przemyslaw Stepien also known
as Shamek who has curated part of the festival program.
IIFF is also delighted
that 15 local entries will be competing in the Shasha/ Ingcitshi
Zim Experts (SIZE) category and the Best Zimbabwean Documentary
Section.
Our big scoop this year
is the world premiere of FREESTATE, a Zimbabwean-French coproduction
directed by Martha Ferguson. This shows what Zimbabwean film is
capable of when people pull together. Also opening the Festival
is NAIROBI HALF LIFE, a German-Kenyan coproduction.
Special events include
the WOMEN’S LABOUR ISSUES IN THE ARTS INDUSTRY TALK to be
held at the Alliance Francaise on the 29th of August. Local women
in the film industry and other creative arts will meet and share
their experiences in the Zimbabwean creative arts industry. This
will also be a platform for women in the creative arts to network,
bond and build their dreams in a relaxed, safe environment. Women
rarely have this opportunity outside the festival week, so ladies
come and let’s build. In the month of September, IIFF travels
to the City of Kings, Bulawayo from the 5th – 7th. In Bulawayo
the film festival shall be at the American Corner for the second
time running and at the Luveve, Mpopoma and Tshabalala Youth Centres.
IIFF 2013 could not have
been achieved without the unwavering support of our partners who
in their different capacities have continued to support women in
film. These include HIVOS, Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust in partnership
with SIDA, the Embassy of the United States of America - Public
Affairs Section, the Embassy of Japan and Japan Foundation, Zimbabwe
German Society, the Embassy of Germany, the Alliance Française,
Book Cafe and Christian College of Southern Africa.
IIFF looks forward to
welcoming back all our old friends at our screenings and events
as well as making new acquaintances. BE INSPIRED TO BE A DRIVER
OF PEACE AND STAY ALIVE!
