The Runners Up

Independence Day

Twelve months after
The air of euphoria lingers on
Family, friends, hope, dreams and lots of laughter
Glasses clinking, laughter bubbling,
The sense of self swelling within
So much to be thankful for and
Even more to aspire to!
Vigour alive
Vibrancy tingling throughout
Minds creating,
Ideas flourishing
Pride swelling
The demise creeps up slowly, innocently
In the beginning it is almost unconsciously
I don’t really recall where, when or how
The crushing of ideas
The slow disintegration
Of the integrity of the soul
And the assault on harmony
Lightning bolts of
Corruption, chaos, discord and deception
A grip on power
Leaves me in tatters
Always reacting
Ever rebellious

Another year
Another anniversary
The soul revived
Strong and determined
United in purpose
Fighting for integrity
Back to centre
Spirits alive
Creativity flourishing
The soul is hard to crush

Conflict, discord, deceit
Violence and repression
Gives birth to new
Strength, Determination, Honour
United in the struggle for
Honesty
Harmony
Sense Of Pride
Freedom Once More

Happy Independence Day!!!

But why?

But why?
In Zimbabwe it has a different meaning?
Is enjoyed by a certain party not all Zimbabweans?
Discrimination, rights violation, liberty curtailed when there is independence?
Election a furious thing?
Inhumane treatments prevail across the country?
Law is applied selectively?
People are forced to attend meetings by the empowered group?
Fundamental freedoms fade?
We are threatened to celebrate?
Our voices not heard, our actions not considered?
But why?

Independence Day

Today is a big day indeed
But what are we celebrating?
I wonder
Yes, the colonizers may have the country
But, I don't see much to celebrate about

Every day I go to work
Yet I am struggling to pay the bills
I am struggling to pay my children's fees
In most cases we do not have enough to eat
Is this what independence is all about?
I wonder

Everywhere you go
The streets are filled with vendors
All who are selling wares in order to survive?
The streets are lined with beggars who are hoping for a kind heart to help them
Everywhere you turn
There is litter everywhere and bins, which have not been emptied, in a very long time
Is this what independence is all about?
I wonder

The days of having tape clean water are long gone
The days are marked by long queues at boreholes
Which are only but a few
How we survive without getting cholera or even typhoid is a mystery
Is this what independence is all about?
I wonder

Yes we have come a long way indeed
But for me there is not much to celebrate about
Because every day is a great struggle for me
I am surviving not but my own will or might
But if there is a God out there
Surely, it is by His grace that I am alive today
Maybe that is what Independence Day is all about

Emancipation!

Every night I sleep in suspense
Am I going to wake up?
Or am I going to be in the hands of THEM

My children are my treasure
As my husband is fighting
Is he going to be amongst the thousands underground
Or is he going to hold me in his arms again

The howling winds
The ever going shots and blasts
The silence and tension in the atmosphere

I am free!
Every living soul has a smile...
That had forever been lost

Free of oppression
Free of whips
Free of racism
