Condolence message on the passing of Walter Muparutsa
Zimbabwe Theatre Association (ZiTA)
April 13, 2011

The Zimbabwe Theatre Association (ZiTA) would like to advise all partners, colleagues, stakeholders, members, comrades and friends of the untimely death of our founder and General Secretary, Walter Muparutsa.

Walter died at the Avenues Clinic, Harare yesterday at about 2100hrs. This follows the recurrence of Non Hodgkins cancer which he had successfully defied in 2008.

Walter was born on 23 March 1941 and was educated at St. Augustine's Mission, Penhalonga. He worked for many years as an editor with the Literature Bureau.

His theatrical involvement began in 1965 culminating in his joining Sundowns Theatre Company in 1970 which was a professional theatre company under the directorship of John Haig at Prince Edward School. He was the first black Best Actor award winner in his role in Athol Fugard's Nongogo. Walter went on to win many awards as an actor, theatre director and film actor. Lately he was a member of the Harare Mayor's advisory committee on arts and culture.

He is survived by his wife Sarah, six children and several grand children. While mourners are gathered at 29 Pollet Avenue, Belvedere, funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

May his soul rest in peace.
