Rituals
crosses the border into Zambia
Rooftop Promotions
April 06, 2011
To share, reflect
and celebrate the landmark victory of the Cashel Valley court case
in which the persecuted "Rituals" team charged with
criminal nuisance for performing this award-winning piece was acquitted,
Rooftop Promotions is taking "Rituals" on a 7 performances
tour of Zambia spread over the Lusaka Play House, University of
Zambia, Quill Club and community centers targeting religious leaders,
human rights or civic groups, journalists, artists, university students,
politicians, the Zimbabweans resident in Zambia, and the general
Zambian public hosted by Mthangatambeta Players' Circle.
The team leaves
for Lusaka Zambia on the 13th of April and will be back in Harare
on the 22nd of April in time for 2 performances at this year's
Harare International Festival of the Arts. "Rituals"
is an award-winning portrayal of community initiatives in dealing
with consequencies of politically motivated violence Zimbabwe written
by the country's renowned playwright Stephen Chifunyise, directed
and produced by Zimbabwe National Theatre Award Leadership Award
winner, Daves Guzha, featuring Zimbabwe's top stage and screen
performers who include Mandla Moyo, Zenzo Nyathi, Joyce Mpofu, Chipo
Bizure, Silvanos Mudzvova and Rutendo Chigudu, with music from Joshua
Mwase and Gibson Sarare. The traveling contingency also includes
Rooftop Promotions Marketing & Sales Executive Tafadzwa Muzondo.
An elated Daves Guzha, says, "We are thrilled to be back in
Zambia at this point in time, having flirted with the Zambian audience
with past productions as "Super Patriots and Morons",
"What They Said What They Got", "Power of Prayer
Pvt.Ltd" among others and the fact that Zambia is our neighbor
with a similar political history who we have shared a lot in terms
of arts and culture presenting Zambian plays such as "Daughters
and Workmates", "Up the Vices Staircase" among
many others for consumption by the Zimbabwean audience. This makes
us feel it's a an essential retreat or recuperation after
our trials and tribulations during the 100 performances tour of
"Rituals" because culturally, as kids, if you are beaten
or have problems at home your first port of call was the neighbor
and in this context, it is imperative that we share the Zimbabwean
story and strengthen the need for healing, reconciliation and peace
at regional level".
"Rooftop's history with National Arts Council of Zambia,
Mthangatambeta Players' circle, Lusaka Playhouse and the University
of Zambia spans for too many years and it is in the spirit of cultural
exchange and sharing the Zimbabwean story, that we go to Zambia
for these 7 performances which will always be followed by a discussion
forum. The month of April in Zambia has often been associated with
the April Theatre Festival which has since been parked for now we
are inspired by this to take advantage of an "expectant"
audience/public in Lusaka which has become used to theatrical activity
during this month".
