On Saturday
23 August, the Mannenberg Jazz Club in Harare came to life with
the "Real Heroes," a Magamba! special Mashoko! Subversive
Spoken Word event featuring poets and spoken word artists from across
the country.
Kubatana was
lucky enough to be there, and recorded some of the acts. Among those
present was one of Zimbabwe's leading poets and writers, Julius
Chingono, who read Propaganda, Doves, As I Go and The First Woman.
As Chingono said, "I find that some of the poetry I wrote before
independence still suits the situation here today. We had just a
few days of independence." You can read his poetry here.
Unfortunately,
Magamba was at the same time as a music event at the Book Café
next door, so some of the poetry competes with the band playing.
But the few audio clips below give you a taste of some of the up
and coming poetry talent alive and well across the country.
Despite Zimbabwe's
many challenges, some people are still managing to find the energy
and commitment to not only create their art and express their voice,
but also to share that - and by so doing, inspire others.
