THE 2007 National Arts Merit Awards nominees were announced in Harare on Wednesday.

This year's edition of the awards, to be held on February 4 at the 7 Arts Theatre, has 25 categories with the media awards being the latest addition.

In the outstanding musician category, urban groover Rufaro Cindy Munyavi has sprung a surprise by taking on Oliver Mtukudzi, Kireni Zulu and Amai Charamba.

Her song, Spare wheel, is also vying for the outstanding album award together with Joseph Garakara's Idya Banana, Alexio Kawara's Tinodanana and Ellen Kupusa Smith's Mbudzi.

Amai Charamba and Kawara have also been nominated for the outstanding album award for The Gospel and Pfimbi Yangu respectively.

The 2006 Zima award winners -- Chiedza Chavatendi -- failed to make it into the outstanding choral group category where Chitungwiza Harmony Singers, MUMC (Harare West) and Glen View SDA Group are competing.

The Zimbabwe Women Writers who are the holders of the 2006 Nama outstanding fiction book have also been nominated for the same award with their Ndebele Book titled Vala Singafohleli Lesisilo.

Shimmer Chinodya is also a nominee in the same category with his new book Strife.

John Kapuya, who had five entries in the outstanding children's book, was nominated for two books -- Buffy the Buffalo and Pepukai Itsvuuramuromo -- in the category.

Journalists, Grace Mutandwa and Phillip Chidavaenzi are tussling in the outstanding first creative published work with their books Whose Daughter My Child and Haunted Trail.

Zvido Zvevanhu, the perennial nominees in the Nama outstanding dance group are also in the run for the award but they have to fight off Dhindo Cultural Dance Group in order to get it.

In a country where there are more than 10 female dance groups, this year's Nama outstanding female dancer has no nominees.

Elizabeth Takawira, Phillis Mashika and Sandra Ndebele did not meet the Nama criteria.

The colourful Mawungira Enharira dancer, Tonderai Phiri, is this year seeking to be recognised for his dancing skills.

Phiri together with Enoch Majeza and Charles Mukege are the nominees in the outstanding male dancer category.

Another surprise is in the outstanding screen production (television drama) when there are various dramas being shown at the moment.

In justifying the absence of nominees in the drama category, Stephen Chigorimbo, who is the chairman of the adjudication panel, said there were seven submissions in the category but "unfortunately none of the submissions met the criteria and quality expectations of Nama".

The seven were Ndakaitei, Nyarai, Munombodei, The Small House Saga, Tiriparwendo, Why Me and Izenzo.

"Let me remind that at Nama it is possible to have a hundred submissions and have no nominees if the quality of submissions is sub-standard. We pride ourselves in excellence and perfection," he said.
