International Film Festival Trust (ZIFFT)

The ten-day
cinema escapade, the Zimbabwe International Film Festival 2005 under
the theme Cre8! Elev8! Innov8! honoured this year’s festival
winners at the official Award Winning Ceremony on the 3rd
of September at the Sheraton Hotel.
The one and
a half hour event saw a host of films receiving the traditional
stone accolades mounted on wood designed by Sculptor, Tonderayi
Mushaya. Presenting the film were a few popular personalities that
included Phakeni Mokowani (Matongo) from the popular Zambian soap,
Kabanana and Naomi Omar, Zimbabwe’s Miss Earth.
Short Film
And Documentary Awards
Entrusted
with the arduous task of selecting the winners, Aswhin Sikereta,
Makomborero Muza and Tendesai Bakasa chose the following films as
this year’s winners-
Best Documentary
was Director, Peter Raymonds’ engrossing film, Shake Hands With
The Devil from Canada. The award was sponsored by SACOD
Best Short
Film went to the pleasant and playful story, LL Chandru IV
B from India sponsored by Libertie.
For the first
time in 2005, ZIFF honoured the best Zimbabwean Production, the
Zimbabwe Calabash Award. The award went to Tawanda Gunda’s
film Tanyardzwa
Another first
was an award for the Best African Costume sponsored
by Black Scissors. The award, which looked at African dress and
a film that focused on the image of Africans in film was garnered
by Thandiswa Mazwai in the documentary Spirits of Uhadi.

Multichoice was the Short Film Project Prize that went to
Kukura Kuremerwa (Size Does Matter) written by Samuel Ziso Mudiwa
and directed by Brighton Tazarirwa
Feature Film
Awards 2005
The
panel of Jury members for the feature film competition consisted
of Steven Chigorimbo, Minali Da Silva and Nancy Kachingwe. The Jury’s
favourites in all the categories included, The Sea Inside (Spain),
The Hidden Blade (Japan), Tasuma, The Fire (Burkina Faso) ,Head
On (Germany), Drum (RSA), Guess Who (USA), The Kiss (Belgium) and
The Soul’s Place (Italy), which received multiple nominations
but like all competitions, they had to choose a winner.
The Best
Director was awarded to Hilde Van Mieghem for the Belgian entry,
The Kiss sponsored by ZIFF’s official communication partner

Mention: Alejandro Amenabar for The Sea Inside from Spain
- Best Picture
was awarded to The Hidden Blade from Japan sponsored by

Sanou from Burkina Faso
- Best Actor/
Actress in a Leading Role went to Sibel Kekilli from
the German entry, Head On
- Special
Mention: Moshidi Motshegwa from Drum from South Africa
- Best Screenplay
was awarded to Head On from Germany written by Fatih Akin sponsored
by hospitality giant, RTG/ACCOR
- Special
Mention: Guess Who written by Kevin Rodney from the
United States of America
- Audience
Choice Award was awarded to The Sea Inside from Spain
By far the most
important Award for the night, The Zimbabwe Film Service
Award that was inaugurated last year, sponsored by the National
Arts Council was awarded to film, theatre and television extraordinaire,
Walter Mparutsa. The accolade is awarded to a local filmmaker
who has contributed immensely to the film industry.
