Authors Owen Sheers and Caryl Lewis last night won Wales' top literary prizes.

The Dust Diaries by Abergavenny poet, playwright and novelist Sheers won English Language Welsh Book Of The Year while Lewis's Martha Jac a Sianco won Welsh Language Book Of The Year.

They will each bank a £10,000 prize after a dinner at Cardiff's Hilton Hotel last night.

Sheers plans to donate at least some of his money to the orphanage in Zimbabwe which inspired his book. He said, 'Arthur Cripps founded the Arthur Cripps Orphanage about 60 to 70 years ago and I had a lot of contact with him and knew if I won some money I would give some to the orphanage.'

Lewis said, 'An award like this gives you the chance to talk about your work and for people to talk about it in detail as well and I think that is something that needs to be done more.'
