OVER 120 stories have been submitted for selection for the 2005 Zimbabwe International Film Festival’s (ZIFF) Short Film Project whose theme is "Creative, Elevate and Innovative".

The short film project seeks to identify aspiring and established filmmakers with stories as well as develop their skills through the production of short films, participation in a film festival and video projection project.

According to the Short Film

Project Director, Nakai Matema, the short stories that deal with contemporary Zimbabwean issues are either in form of drama or comedy.

"We received the stories from all corners of the country and after

the selection we hope to start a script workshop in May and June where the selected stories would be developed into scripts before further developing them into short films," Matema explained adding that they would then invite filmmakers.

Talking about this year’s theme, Matema said: "We chose the theme so that we can push our own Zimbabwean film directors to be more creative and innovative and I would want to assure everyone that we are going to do everything that it takes to push them to such standards."

She also said that this year’s festival will be slightly shorter than last year’s as it will run for 10 days only — from August 26 to September 4.

"We wanted to emulate the period that is taken by other international film festivals. However, it is too early to disclose how many countries are going to participate or the number of international directors who are coming."

The project, that was founded in 2000 with the aim of improving the quality of locally-produced films and giving filmmakers resources to explore their talents, will by the end of this week choose the final stories that are going to be developed into scripts and later on, short films.

Last year, ZIFF in the short film category featured short films like the much-awaited Kare Kare Zvako directed by Tsitsi Dangarembga, Chitsidzo by Tawanda Gunda, Traburo by Nocks Chatiza and She Got Mad by Nobert Fero.
