More people being pushed off the land
Zimbabwe Civic Education Trust (ZIMCET)
August 26, 2003

The Zimbabwe Civic Education Trust (ZIMCET) is concerned at the way that the interests of the majority continue to be trampled on by a few favoured individuals, in the land reform programme. In a space of two weeks more 2000 resettled farmers are in danger of being evicted from farms they occupied three years back, to make way for individual farmers who are well connected.

Not too long ago, there was mayhem at Little England farm where more than 1000 resettled farmers at least they thought they were, were being asked to make way for a few favoured individuals.

Before the dust has even settled in that case and even as the affected farmers still ponder over their future, another 1000 farmers at Windcrest Farm near Masvingo had their properties torched, in a bid to evict them from the farm, said to have been purchased by a government employee. The loss of these farmers is double edged in that they are likely to lose the land and they have had their property destroyed.

ZIMCET appeals to the government especially those responsible for distributing land, to halt these evictions. Some ruling party officials have openly criticised their colleagues for acquiring more than one farm. It would be an idea if the extra farms could be made available to those who purchased farms "long back".
